How Often Should You Repaint Your Home in Sydney?

Realistic repaint cycles for Sydney interiors and exteriors, and the signs that tell you it is time regardless of the calendar.

There is no fixed calendar for repainting. How often a home needs it depends on the surface, the paint used last time, and how hard the house is worked by people and weather.

Interiors

High-traffic areas show wear first: hallways, stairwells, kids' rooms and the walls around light switches and door handles. Bedrooms and formal rooms often last much longer. Many owners repaint living areas when they change furniture or before selling, rather than waiting for the paint to fail.

Exteriors

Outside, the sun does most of the damage. North and west facing walls take the most UV and heat and usually fade and chalk first. Timber weatherboards, fascias and window frames need attention sooner than rendered or brick surfaces. Homes near the harbour or the coast also deal with salt air.

Signs it is time, whatever the calendar says

  • Chalking: run a hand over the wall and it comes away with a powdery residue.
  • Fading that is uneven across walls.
  • Cracking, peeling or flaking, especially on timber and around windows.
  • Bare or soft timber, which lets moisture in and leads to rot.
  • Mould or water stains, which point to a moisture problem that needs fixing before painting.
  • Gaps in caulking around frames and joins.

Small jobs save big ones

Touching up window frames, sealing gaps and fixing small patches as they appear keeps the exterior protected and pushes back a full repaint. That is exactly the sort of work our repairs and maintenance service is for.
